Vacation 2001, Day 3
Monday, July 23
Beijing and The Great Wall

[ Home ] [ Calendar of Trip]

2 major stops on todays agenda. The first being The Great Wall of China and the second the Ming Tombs where to quote Goways itinerary "a total of 13 Imperial tombs from the Ming Dynasty are found".

Created July 13, 2001.

What actually happened on this day.

The 2 major stops mentioned above did happen but in the opposite order. There was also a stop at a jewelry manufacturing shop and a border store I think it was called that wasn't on any border but it is there to cater to the tourist trade heading to the Great Wall. As you will see below I saw one of the 13 Ming Tombs (most haven't been opened), a fashion show of silk garments at the border store, and not very much of the Great Wall.

This was one of the gates to the tomb. It is said
that if you go through it from this side bad luck
will come to you. But going the other way is ok.
Nobody in the group I was with went either way.
The picture to the right was taken from the top
of the tomb seen just above the gate above.
From what I remember as being the top of the
tomb. At the top is a building housing this
emperors artifacts, then the gate from the
previous picture. With the hearing problems I
was having at this time I'm not sure if the grey
stones are or aren't the tomb. Sorry!

This tree at the tomb has important significance.
The root structure looks like a tortus that is
carrying the weight of the rest of the tree on it's
back. The tree is a symbol of something else thus
the carrying of that something else.
The silk fashion show at the border store. Dosen't
look too old fashioned in this picture does it?

Me at the entrance to the
Great Wall at Badaling, China.

Looking up the Great Wall.

Looking down the Great Wall.

Down form a different spot.

Just to say I really was on the Great Wall.
As you can see, I didn't see very much of it.
Oh well, what can you do?

On the way back into Beijing I observed that there
are many buildings with communications towers of
various types on top. This is just one of many.
