Vacation 2001, Day 13

Franz Josef - Greymouth - Christchurch, New Zealand
Expectations for Today
Today I go to Greymouth to catch New Zealand Rails TranzAlpine Express. This train travels through the Authurs Pass and over the Southern Alps. This train trip I have never done before so it should be interesting.

What actually happened on this day.
The weather being what it was the trip was mostly uninteresting and because of water on the windows and eventually darkness there are virtually no images for this day. I had never done this before so there aren't even any 1992 images to use here. For the final use of the New Zealand map, the coach part of this day is in PURPLE and the rail journey is in BLACK.
So here are what images there are, all 1 of them...
|Here is the Tranz Alpine train stopped at a station
just after Arthurs Pass. There is a long tunnel with
a steep gradient that requires the addition of 2
locomotives to get the train through. Here the 2
locomotives are being removed for the rest of the
trip to Christchurch. You can see some of the
scenery in the picture and even less from the train.
Tonight is in the Christchurch Parkroyal Hotel (soon to be an Intercontinental Hotel apparently.) It was a much happier stay than the first one when there wasn't any luggage for a time.
