Expectations for Today

After all the traveling it's now time to return home. So Cathy Pacific Flight 828 departs Hong Kong at 4:20 pm (4:20 am in Brantford) and arrives in Toronto at 10:00 pm. for a total time of 17 hours and 40 minutes. See the BLACK line on the map below. After clearing of customs etc probably arrive home in Brantford sometime after midnight. Get one day of peace and start back to work Monday the 20th at 8:00 am approximately 32 hours after arriving home. Am I a glutton for punishment or what?!!!

What actually happened this day.

This was another hot and steamy day. The itinerary says "day at leisure until your transferred to the airport for your departure". This is exactly what I did. The hotel pickup was at 1:15 pm. All the pictures below were taken during the trip to the airport.

Incredible traffic, even at 1:30 on a Saturday
afternoon. Most people work to noon on
Saturdays in Hong Kong.

A truck carrying bamboo scaffolding.

A typical street scene in Hong Kong.

A typical street corner (with some reflection
from the bus window as well).

Two of the three new suspension bridges built
to access the new airport.
This is the third bridge. It goes to one of the
other islands. (Due to a tinted bus window this
image needed major colour correction just to
look half decent.)

The second of the 2 bridges to the airport.

These bridges have 2 decks. High speed trains
to and from the airport run on the lower deck.

The last view of Hong Kong. This is Kowloon the
part of Hong Kong where my hotel was situated.

Arrived at the airport an hour later and went to the gate. There was some sort of security alert going on at the time but I'm sure that it was nothing compared to what it is like now after the events of September 11, 2001 in New York. The route the plane took was to take off to the west, then turn east, then turn northeasterly and fly between China and Taiwan, then up the east coast of Japan and on to Anchorage, Alaska. It was dark when we passed Japan and we could see the lights of Osaka and Nagoya. I would have seen Tokyo and Yokohama but they were under a cloud bank. I could just see the glow through the clouds. Arrived in Anchorage at approximately 11:00 am Alaska time and departed for Toronto at approximately 11:45 arriving in Toronto just a few minutes past 10:00 pm. Picked up by AirLink and was home by 12:15 am Sunday. After 29 day I'm glad to be here.
