Home      Calendar of Trip        On to Day 15

Today was a really hard one to take. Sail from Esna to Luxor. That was it. So we had lots of time to watch that natives along the shore of the Nile. Just around noon we passed through the lock at Esna. We arrived in Luxor about 4:30 P.M.

Various shots (mainly from video) along the shore.

A fairly typical shoreline scene consisting of a water pumping station and a falucca.

A small village on the shore of the Nile. This would be typical of a small town.

Another small village. This one is more in the desert than
the Nile flood plain.

Wash day. (This may happen every day.)

Somewhere under this pile of branches
is the man carrying it.

On the way back from the field.

This looks like a donkey race but they were really just
coming out to wave to the people on several ships
passing by.

The child walking behind the donkey is trying to encourage
it to go faster. There is a younger child sitting in front of the
man.

Here we pass through the lock at Esna.

The old lock at Esna, built by the British in the early 1900's.
The people on the jetty are trying to sell to the people on
the boat. They would throw stuff up and seemed to want
money for it. Most was thrown back.

The new lock built by the Italians. The old one (and its
associated dam) is no longer used. This one takes 2
ships (just 1 in the old one) and half the time which keeps
the ship owners happy.

Here we're in the lock waiting to go down.

Here we're down. The difference in approximately 20 feet.

This is the dam we had to go through the lock to get around.

To conclude this leisurely day a couple of pretty sunset pictures after we arrived at Luxor.

Tomorrow we head back to Cairo and the Pyramids.
On to Day 15.
